A two-day orientation for new faculty and staff was held on September 17th and 18th in No.1 Academic Lecture Hall in order to help new teachers and staff better understand the university, including its history, culture, positioning developmental plan, to adapt to the new environment and posts sooner, to foster noble faculty and staff code of ethics, to ensure high quality teaching and research, and to develop talents for CPC and the country.
Huang Jingxia, Director of the Personnel Office, presided over the opening ceremony on September 17th. President Hu Shejun delivered an address and Vice President Zhang Shimei gave a coaching report.
Around the theme “Cultivate Our Roots, Iron Our Soul, Develop Our Young People, and Make Achievements and Contributions in the Greater Bay”, ,President Hu expressed his ardent expectations for the new faculty and staff. He hoped that they would be able to hold in awe and admiration education as a profession, put in profound love and dedication, stand firm in their posts and become mature quickly. They are expected to guide, advise, support, care, counsel and aid their students in ideology, specialization, daily life, difficulties, emotions, mental health as well as careers. The faculty and staff must be strivers of the era and builders of the university.
Vice President Zhang Shimei made a report on “Our University:History and Charter”. She elaborated on our university history, motto, charter, positioning and planning.. Professor Wang Jinfa, a Doctoral Supervisor of the School of Life Sciences from Sun Yat-sen University and winner of the first National Famous Teacher Award, was invited to conduct the first lecture for the rookie teachers on teacher morality, centering around “A Teacher’s Soul and Arts”, sharing his journey and experience as a teacher, with “Original Aspiration and Mission, the Soul of a Teacher, the Way of Knowing and Believing, Ironing of the Soul and Cultivating of Talents, and Facilitating Success of Students”. He set a role model teacher and encouraged us to stand firm on the podium and aspire to be the “Four-Quality Excellent Teacher) (Ideals and Faith, Morality, Knowledge, Compassion).
Xia Baojun, Associate Professor from South China Normal University, was invited to give a lecture on a teacher’s etiquette and protocol. And Huang Yanping, Director of Mental Health Education and Counseling Center at Guangdong University of Technology, offered special counselling on the identification and treatment of students' mental problems.
On the 18th, the study meeting was conducted by Chen Yingzheng, Head of the Teaching Management Division, Chen Tianyong, Head of the Development and Planning Research Department, Huang Jingxia, Head of the Personnel Department and other functional department heads. They made detailed exposition of our university’s teaching, scientific research and personnel system.
A night cruise of the Pearl River was also organized for the new faculty and staff so as to enable them to fall in love with Guangzhou and exprience the charming city in neon lights, an evidence of the splendid achievements of the four-decade reform and opening up.
