2023 Guangdong Province Private University Presidents Forum Held in GZIST

( HUANG Feiqing LIANG Yuming) On May 12, 2023 Guangdong Province Private University Presidents Forum was held in Guangzhou Institute of Science and Technology (GZIST), themed “Run Our Institutions by Law and Regulations, Promote High Quality Development for Private Higher Education”, under the guidance of Guangdong Province Department of Education, hosted by Guangdong Association for Private Education and organized by GZIST. Dai Qingzhou, Director of Policy and Regulation Division of Guangdong Province Department of Education, Hu Jun, Former President of Jinan University, Zhao Kang, President of Guangdong Association for Private Education and Zhang Yaorong, Executive Vice President, Hu Shejun, GZIST President and Huang Shengcheng, Secretary of CPC GZIST Committee attended the Forum with the other ninety delegates from the Province private universities and enterprises.

Dai Qingzhou addressed the Forum on behalf of Guangdong Province Department of Education and spoke highly of its timeliness in the context of absorbing the essence of the CPC 20th National Congress and studying and implementing the Theme Education of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for the New Era. He emphasized four points: elevate our positioning and view private higher education from the political perspective in accordance with the CPC educational policy, cultivate builders and successors of socialism well versed in morality, intellect, physical education, aesthetics and physical labor; raise our consciousness in private higher education for the public good and our country’s economic and social development; enhance high quality growth of private higher education by seizing the opportunity and fostering distinctive features, solving such problems as student source, faculty and staff and digitalization; direct regulation, run private higher education by law, and upgrade our effectiveness and efficiency.

Huang Shengheng delivered his welcome message on behalf of the Forum Organizer-GZIST. He briefed the audience on the path and achievements of GZIST and expected good solutions from the Forum for solving common and key issues of private universities.

Hu Jun, a leading expert made the keynote speech entitled “Reflections upon Private University High Quality Development by Law”, which analyzed the issues and challenges, parameters, advantages and transition and significance of cultural development of private universities. The biggest advantage of this education sector is its flexibility and the staff-student center mode is beneficial to the governance in the form of a community of stakeholders.

For the sharing session, GZIST Vice President Zhang Shimei chaired the session and five university presidents did the talking alternately.

GZIST President Hu Shejun elaborated on the university’s implementation plan for its engineering discipline, advanced equipment and strategic cutting-edge industries serving Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA), deepening the mainstay responsibility system reform of the schools within the university system, enhancing renovation in quality, efficiency and motivation, comprehensively promoting faculty evaluation system reform and compensation scheme for attracting high-caliber talents, further branding the “Three Holistic Education Mode” and the leading of CPC Construction for high quality development.

President Huang Daqian of Guangdong Baiyun College, President Wang Rihua of Guangzhou College of Technology and Business, President Yu Shiyou of Guangzhou Nanfang College, and President Jiang Xinhua of Guangzhou Urban Construction Polytechnic shared their views on high quality development.

President Zhao Kang of Guangdong Association for Private Education made the final summary of the Forum by praising the insights contributed by the participants. The three consensus reached include: 1. high quality development is the mega trend for private higher education; 2. running a university by law is the precondition and foundation for high quality development, and 3. forming a community of stakeholders for co-build, co-win and co-share is the significance of high quality development. President Zhao called on all the private universities to deeply absorb and implement the essence of the CPC 20^th National Congress and Guangdong Province High Quality Development Conference, streamline strategies and capitalize on policies to make Guangdong private higher education a better future.
